SHNA Winter Walk

winterThe Stanton Heights Green Committee will be hosting our second annual winter walk through the neighborhood to showcase some of the work done over the last two years. All neighbors are invited to join the walk and discuss locations and ideas for upcoming projects.
Meet us at the corner of Stanton & Woodbine (by the bus shelter) at 9 am on Sunday, February 19th!
PLEASE NOTE: The date previously announced at our January community meeting is incorrect. Please update your calendars accordingly!
We’ll be making stops at the neighborhood sign near Sunnyside, the playground off Farmington Road, the rain garden at Stanton & McCandless, and the community gardens in Allegheny Cemetery. We’ll end the tour near where we started – at the home of one of our green committee members – where we will enjoy some light snacks, cider, and hot chocolate around a fire pit.
All are invited – the walk is kid and pet friendly, just come prepared for the weather and to be out in the elements!

Stanton Hops Celebration!

image4The Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association Invites you to celebrate with us, contribute to your community, and taste our Stanton Hops!

On Sunday September 18th from 2:00 – 7:00 pm, Roundabout Brewery (4901 Butler Street) will be releasing a limited edition of a beer that has been “wet hopped” using the hop flowers grown at our Stanton Heights rain garden.
The rain garden was initially funded through a “Love Your Block” grant program – a partnership between the City of Pittsburgh and People’s Gas to revitalize Pittsburgh- block by block. We selected the block at the intersection of Stanton & McCandless to weed, plant a rain garden, paint the stair railing, and grow hops to cover the deteriorating retaining wall. Following our work this spring, we have received two additional awards to continue work on the site!
A portion of sales from this keg will go back to our neighborhood to cover some of our expenses and fund future projects like this. We hope that this will be the first of many harvest seasons that will allow us to share in the fruits of our labor with everyone!
Please join us for what promises to be an excellent party – in addition to the beverages, there will be food and music!  There is no admission cost and friends and family are welcome.  See you on September 18th!

Spring Clean-up & Rain Garden Planting

IMG_4423

It’s time for some spring cleaning! Many of you have volunteered your time over the past several years for our annual spring litter clean up. This year, the Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association will host two work days on April 16th and May 7th to begin work on a rain garden and beautification project, in addition to the annual litter clean up in conjunction with the Spring Redd Up. Recently, SHNA was lucky to receive a $1,000 Love Your Block Grant from the City of Pittsburgh to help fund phase one of the rain garden. We especially need your support to help build this garden for the community! In addition, we will be planting Hop plants in collaboration with the Hops on Lots program. There is a job for everyone! In past years, the event has been a fantastic way for neighbors to get to know one another and build a sense of community.

Both events kick off at 8:00 am with registration, coffee and donuts and a safety talk. Clean up & planting work will begin promptly at 9:00 am. Please join us, and share this invitation with your neighbors!
