FAQs: Hunting in Stanton Heights

backyard-deerMany of us who live in Stanton Heights love that we are surrounded by woods – from the Allegheny Cemetery to the Allegheny River Greenway  along Butler street, there are many pockets of forest within our neighborhood that attract wildlife. Our large population of deer has drawn some urban hunters to the neighborhood, prompting questions and concerns from our community members. On January 18th, representatives from the PA State Game Commission joined the SHNA at our monthly community meeting to address neighbors’ questions and concerns regarding hunting in the city. This informative discussion helped our neighbors better understand the rules and regulations surrounding legalized hunting within city limits, and what to do if we see something that doesn’t look right. (spoiler alert – call 911!) We’ve summarized the highlights on this page, and you can visit their website for more detailed information: www.pgc.pa.gov or call the regional office: 724-238-9523

If you see anyone in the neighborhood who appears to not be following the regulations below, please call 911 to report the individual and any helpful information to police. Our City of Pittsburgh Police work closely with our region’s Game Wardens to enforce these laws and ensure safe and responsible hunting.

  • Hunting is legal on private property only WITH PERMISSION of the property owner. It is unlawful to hunt for, shoot at, trap, take, chase or disturb wildlife within 150 yards of any occupied residence, camp, industrial or commercial building, farm house or farm building, or school or playground without the permission of the occupants.
  • Hunting is prohibited within 150 yards of a school or playground
  • Hunting is not allowed on city property (as city property is considered private property and permission has not been granted by the City of Pittsburgh)
  • One caveat to the above: Hunting IS ALLOWED in designated greenways. However, they would need to remain within the 150 yard rule
  • Hunting in cemeteries is prohibited. In some instances, cemeteries have developed special programs to manage large deer populations, however this does not currently exist in the Allegheny Cemetery.
  • Poaching is prohibited. This includes:
    • Baiting by leaving out food
    • Hunting at night (hunting hours are officially 1/2 hour before dawn and 1/2 hour after dark)
  • For more information regarding safety zones, please visit: https://pagamecommission.wordpress.com/2015/01/16/safety-zones/

Given all of the above restrictions, there are only a few small areas within our neighborhood that would not fall into safe zones. We hope this information is helpful for the community and encourages safe hunting practices!

Greenway Public Meeting

On July 1st at 7:00 pm, the Union Project will host a public meeting to discuss the possibility of creating a Greenway linking Stanton Heights & Morningside. The area includes the wooded hillside that runs parallel to the river & Butler street below, and over a period of time, would protect that land from future development. If you’d like to learn more about what this would mean for our community, please attend!
