Stanton Heights Comcast Cares Day / Redd Up Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, April 26st

WHO:         Stanton Heights community members and Comcast volunteers

WHAT:       Cleanup of litter and illegally dumped items /removal of invasive plants and vines / planting.

WHEN:       Saturday April 26, 2014, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon; rain or shine

WHERE:     Stanton Ave. and Woodbine St.—site of the proposed community parklet

WHY:         A safer, more beautiful neighborhood

Stanton Heights Neighborhood Clean up 2012 027“Stanton Heights, Comcast Cares Day / Redd Up Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, April 26st

The Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association is partnering with Comcast to host a beautification project and  litter cleanup in Stanton Heights in conjunction with Comcast Cares Day and the Spring Redd Up. There is a job for everyone! The event kicks off at 8 am with registration, coffee and a light breakfast provided by Comcast. The cleanup starts promptly at 9 am.

The cleanup will begin on the corner of the intersection of Stanton Ave. and Woodbine St.—the site of the proposed community park.  The cleanup, will address litter and larger illegally dumped items at the community park site, removal of invasive plants and vines, planting in the bed on the site as well as a litter pick up on the the streets near the site.  There will be jobs for all ability levels.  Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves.   Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor during the cleanup and must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.  Gloves and bags will be provided but items like loppers, bow saws and wheelbarrows would be helpful for the removal of invasive plants.

Funding for the event is provided by Comcast.  Comcast volunteers will be helping with the cleanup, and Comcast representatives will be on hand to give away T-shirts to all pre-registered volunteers.  Volunteers are welcome to stay for pizza after the clean-up to celebrate a job well done. Please join us, and share this invitation with your neighbors!   Individuals interested in volunteering for this event should contact  Michael Sturges at 412.606.7542 or mike.sturges@alleghenycleanways.org  or  Jim Heinrich 412-782-1313 or jheinrich81354@gmail.com

Community Yard Sales – July 27

Yard saleIt’s that time of year again! Clean out your basement, garage, and closets and sign up for the annual Stanton Heights Neighborhood Yard sales. Houses across Stanton Heights will participate on July 27th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

There will be a small fee to participate, which helps to defray the cost of advertisements, materials for directional signs, and the sale maps. The fee is $5 ($2 for Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association members).

Volunteers are needed to help with getting the word out to our neighbors about the sale, and activities on the day of the sale to include hanging directional signs, and passing out maps of sale locations.

Stanton Heights Neighborhood Meeting & Vote

On Wednesday, July 18th at 6:30 pm, Stanton Heights residents will gather to vote on two proposals to develop a greenspace or park at the corner of Stanton & Woodbine. To vote, residents must be a member of the Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association. Dues are $5, and you may sign up at the meeting.

When: Wednesday, July 18th, 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Where: The Commons at North Aiken – 5333 N. Aiken Ct. (Parking and entrance to the building is in the rear)

The two plans are:

PLAN 1: Contemplative Garden

  •  Seating: A few small benches.
  • New, low-maintenance, native plants and shrubs to beautify the space.
  • Clean-up and maintenance of existing trees and plants: removal of rotting trees, trimming lower branches of existing trees back to improve visibility.
  • Walking path: wheelchair accessible.
  • Lighting.
  •  Community bulletin board.
  • “Stanton Heights” sign.
  • Historical information about Stanton Heights displayed.
  • Move and combine the Stanton Ave. bus stops (subject to Port Authority approval).
  • New fence, per Comcast’s plans, near drop-off.

PLAN 2: Woodsy Walk

  • Clean-up and maintenance of existing trees and plants: removal of rotting trees, trimming lower branches of existing trees back to improve visibility.
  • Walking path: wheelchair accessible.
  • Lighting.
  • Community bulletin board.
  • “Stanton Heights” sign.
  • Historical information about Stanton Heights displayed.
  • Move and combine the Stanton Ave. bus stops (subject to Port Authority approval).
  • New fence, per Comcast’s plans, near drop-off.

** The following are not included in any Plan for the space:

  • Mosaic wall.
  • Dog park.
  • Recreational/playground equipment.
