Free Trees!

tree plantingIs your yard or street front missing a tree?  The SHNA green committee wants to help!

Treevitalize, a program of Tree Pittsburgh offers free trees to community groups who have committed tree tenders – trained volunteers to help care for and maintain the trees.  Fortunately, our community has identified tree tenders, now we just need to identify possible tree locations!  For the first round of applications, we need to identify 10 new tree locations – these can be a front yard or tree pit between the sidewalk and the street.
Unfortunately, many of the trees in Stanton Heights were planted many years ago and are in need of removal due to overgrowth (large trees interfere with utility lines and impact sidewalks) disease, and death.  The city has slowly been removing many of these older trees, leaving major gaps in our urban tree canopy.  Tree Pittsburgh is working to help replace these trees with native species that are appropriately sized for our urban environment.
If you are interested in applying for a tree, complete this short application. Trees will be planted in Spring 2016, but completed applications should be sent to our green committee (not to the treevitalize coordinator as directed on the form) no later than Monday, September 21st.  We will be assembling all requests and submitting them as one application!
If you have questions about this process, please contact Lissa Geiger Shulman who is the head of our green committee.

Free Trees!

treeHave you ever thought your street would look better if it were lined with trees? Do you wish you had more shade to lower your electricity bills? Allegheny County’s TreeVitalize program is a great resource and will plant a FREE tree in your yard! All we need to do is get 10 households in Stanton Heights to sign up, and applications are due on September 20th.

The trees will be planted between the yard and the sidewalk at the front or side of the home. If you are interested in getting a tree for your street, please fill out this tree_planting_application and send it to Lisa (our city forester and also a Stanton Heights resident) at: lisa.ceoffe@pittsburghpa.gov

If you are interested in getting more involved in planting trees throughout the community, give Lisa a call at 412-670-5072
